How can we help, detective?

The most common questions about the game, buying it and playing — all in one place.

Before you buy

  • A crime detective game and an escape room at home. It combines physical case files with an interactive investigation app: you study evidence, visit locations on the town map, solve puzzles and, in the end, name the killer yourself.

  • The boxed edition has physical case files in three sealed envelopes and 4 activations for different email addresses. In the online edition all files are in the app and the code works for one account. The case, the puzzles and the endings are identical.

  • The English edition is in preparation — the online edition launches first. Join the detective network (the form at the bottom of the page) and we'll let you know when it's out. The Polish edition is available on Allegro and Empik — see the Store page.

  • Very soon. We're preparing a shop on our website — join the detective network and we'll tell you when it opens.

  • We recommend it from 14 years old — because of the serious theme, realistic materials and demanding puzzles.

  • No. What matters is observation, logical thinking and wanting to have fun. The game is approachable for beginners, and when you get stuck the four-level hint system helps you on.

  • 1–8 players. Investigate on your own, as a pair or with family and friends. With the boxed edition everyone can play on their own account (up to 4 accounts per code). The online edition is one account — in a group, play together on one large screen.

  • About 6 hours on average. Progress saves automatically, so you can stop and come back whenever it suits you — even the next evening.

  • Yes — it's a popular gift for fans of crime stories and escape rooms. The set is complete, and one boxed copy has 4 activations, so the recipient can play with family or friends.

Gameplay

  • Open the case file and take out the instructions and the chapter envelopes. Go to murdermysteryfiles.com/notm, sign in, enter the code from your set and open the Chapter I envelope. The app shows you the first location where the investigation begins.

  • The game has three chapters — each one is a separate sealed envelope. You open the next one only when the investigation leads you to it. Everything you need for the puzzles is in the materials of the current chapter.

  • Use the four-level hint system: a small nudge, moderate help, a strong hint or the full solution. You decide how much help you need — one tough puzzle won't stop the whole adventure.

  • You lead most of the investigation at your own pace. At one point, though, a timed task appears — whether you make it decides what information you manage to get.

  • Yes, two. In the finale you name the person you believe is guilty. Choose right and you learn the real solution. Make a mistake and the story ends differently. At the end the app sums up your investigation and awards you one of 5 detective badges.

  • A computer, tablet or phone with internet access. A notebook and pen are handy for jotting down leads, although the app also has built-in notes.

  • The Polish edition has its materials in Polish. The app itself can be switched to English in the game settings. A full English edition is in preparation — the online version launches first.

  • The game is designed as a one-time investigation, but you can reset your progress in the settings at any time and start over.

Account and tech

  • Yes. You need a connection while you play — for the map, unlocking locations and solving puzzles.

  • No. The app runs in your browser on a computer, tablet or phone.

  • Yes. Progress is saved online, so just sign in with the same email address on another device to continue the investigation.

  • A boxed-edition code has 4 activations for different email addresses — every player can investigate on their own account. An online-edition code works for one account.

  • Yes. Nothing gets destroyed, cut out or written on during the game — the set stays complete. If there are activations left, the next person can start their own investigation.

  • Yes. We only store the data the game needs to work, such as your email address and progress, and we don't share it with third parties. See our Privacy Policy for details.

  • Write to us through the contact form — describe what's happening and give the email address of your account. We usually reply within 24 hours.
